General Description And Classification Standards
The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) was created to improve how Atlanta manages transportation and its right of way. One of the main goals of the department and the city’s Strategic Transportation Plan is to improve safety on the city’s streets and to improve the experience of pedestrians, transit riders, cyclists, and scooter riders. The GIS Analyst role within ATLDOT’s Strategy & Planning Division will be part of an in-house team that manages internal and external analytics to better leverage data to support the implementation of the strategic plan and improve how the city plans, maintains, and sets policy for its right of way. The Analyst will be responsible for data collection, spatial analysis, mapping and visually representing data, and assisting in the organization and maintenance of a well-curated library of spatial data layers, among other duties. The GIS Analyst will also be responsible for communicating the key takeaways from analysis to senior leaders. This is the Senior level for this job family. This is a fully seasoned professional level capable of independently carrying out most assignments typical of the profession. This level would be attainable by multiple incumbents in a work group (not necessarily by all), but would not be an “automatic” promotional level.
Will report directly to the Director of Data & Analytics, but will operate under only very general supervision. May regularly work independently with responsibility for an assigned function or program.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned. Provides support for ATLDOT Strategy & Planning’s Analytics Team through data collection, data set management and curation, mapping, and spatial analysis. May function as a point of contact for coordination with other City of Atlanta and/or Partner Agency GIS teams or team members. Additional assignments and areas of responsibility may be complex and diverse, including, but not limited to, the construction of custom geoprocessing tools, GIS system design and asset management, modifying or updating complex and extensive GIS environments, and coding and debugging programs.
A capable independent operator comfortable with selecting from multiple procedures and methods to accomplish tasks.
Offers significant feedback to supervisor in establishing and/or revising new or existing work methods, timetables, performance standards, etc. May provide work group leadership, guidance, and/or training to less experienced staff, or act as a team lead on large projects.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Skills in organizing and presenting proposals or information. Ability to plan and carry out virtually any typical assignment within professional area. Ability to train others; ability to build effective relationships within the organization.
Minimum Qualifications Education And Experience
Bachelor’s degree in GIS, geography, computer science or engineering, or a related field (equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis). 1-2 years of GIS work experience, or any equivalent combination of education, experience, or training that provides the required combination of knowledge and skills.
Preferred Education & Experience
Master’s degree in GIS, geography, computer science or engineering, or a related field. 2-4 years of GIS work experience, or any equivalent combination of education, experience, or training that provides the required combination of knowledge and skills. Additional skills and experience in programming, statistics, data visualization, graphics, and/or database management, as represented by proficiencies in languages and/or software suites including Python, SQL, R, Tableau, Power BI, the Adobe Creative Cloud.
