KEITH SEARLES

Founder, EDGE

I started Urban GIS 13 years ago as a one man company. Back then, there was a very small percentage of ethnically diverse geospatial professionals in the field, and an even smaller percentage of diverse business owners. Establishing a company wasn't easy, but I was blessed to have a lot of support and encouragement. Starting my business was absolutely one of the best decisions that I've made in my life.

I want to pay it forward by doing my part in fostering more networking, mentorship and opportunities for ethnically diverse geospatial enthusiasts and business owners in the community; particularly in this climate of social unrest, long standing economic disparities, and international financial crisis, where the ability to advance one's position is becoming increasingly difficult.

With all of that in mind, I decided to actively be a be an active part of the solution by creating a LinkedIn group and corresponding website called EDGE (Ethnically Diverse Geospatial Engagement). The primary purpose of EDGE is to build a network of people involved with geospatial enterprises from all walks of life, who care about making a difference by assisting individuals and companies founded by people from disenfranchised ethnic groups. The collective goal is for aspiring applicants and opportunity seekers to become more aware and prepared to take advantage of jobs, internships and projects within the geospatial industry.
